A wet room looks simple, but it only works if the whole floor falls to the drain and every inch is waterproofed. The wet room pictured has a tiled floor laid to a central drain, a ceiling rainfall head, a concealed thermostatic valve, a recessed niche and a wall-hung toilet, all in a room with a sloping ceiling.
How we build a wet room
- Floor checked and strengthened where needed, especially over timber joists
- Former or screed laid to fall towards a linear or centre drain
- Full tanking membrane on the floor and walls in the wet zone
- Concealed valve and supplies set before tiling
- Flood test before the tiles go down
Walk-in showers
If a full wet room isn’t practical, a low-profile tray with a single glass panel gives the same open feel with less floor work, like the shower room pictured with its wall-hung toilet.
Good for accessibility
Level access with no tray lip makes showering easier for older or less mobile family members, and can be planned with grab rails and a seat.

Questions about wet rooms and walk-in showers
Can I have a wet room upstairs?
Yes, on a properly prepared timber floor with a suitable former and a drain route to the soil stack.
Will water get out of the shower area?
Not if the floor falls correctly. Glass screens help in smaller rooms.
Wet room or walk-in shower?
A wet room is fully level and fully tanked. A walk-in shower uses a low tray. Both look open; a walk-in is quicker and cheaper.
